Re: [Geology2] Extremely rare, precious opal is in Santa Fe

It is gorgeous but likely it ought to be in a museum.  I feel that opals are bad luck. And I will be the first to admit that is sheer superstition but we have had family members that have owned opals and their lives were very unlucky. My grandmother refused to pass down these opals and she did something with them, I don't know what..buried them or threw them away..something. She felt that anyone owning them would suffer for it. lol.. But she had a good long life with her loved ones about her so maybe she was right because the ones who did own the opals did suffer the death of their loved ones, abuse, divorce and Alzhiemer's. Maybe it is just coincidence. Maybe..Allison

Extremely rare, precious opal is in Santa Fe

Australian miner discovers valuable gem

Published  May 09, 2013
"It made me cry when I saw it and I think it will make people gasp at the very least when they see it!" said Jetter.
Jetter is talking about a 306 carat, black opal from Australia, buried in the earth for the last 400 million years. An Australian miner named Bobby discovered the stone and is now ready to share it with the world. He selected Jetter to create a one-of-a-kind piece of jewelry to sell, and then share the profits.
Thirteen years ago, Bobby retired from a long and hard career in the mining industry. He sold his tools and was about to call it quits, when someone handed him one last bucket of dirt. To his incredible surprise, Bobby saw something shinny. Turns out, it was one of the world's most rare, valuable and precious stones.
"You get it when the good Lord's ready to give you a bit of it," said Bobby during a recent trip to Santa Fe. "That gives you a buzz I can tell you."
Jetter said a stone of this size and quality hasn't been found anywhere in the world since the 1930's.
