1997: A major heat wave started on 8.2 and ended on this day (across parts of Southern California).
Temperatures hit 121° F in Thermal, 118° F in Borrego Springs, 113° F in Brea, 110° F in Riverside and Ontario, and 101° F in Julian.
The low temperature was 93° F in Palm Springs on 8.5.
1983: An early morning severe thunderstorm with winds over 50 mph overturned 7 airplanes at the Kingman, AZ, airport and 5 tractor trailers at a nearby industrial park.
Several mobile homes were blown over and numerous power poles were damaged.
No injuries were noted.
1981: Saint Helena had a high temperature of 108° F.
1981: Portola had a high temperature of 105° F.
1963: Thunderstorms struck Newberry, Yucca Valley and Twentynine Palms.
Floods coming off lava beds south of Newberry put 10" of mud in the homes of 30 families.
Widespread losses were also felt by livestock and agriculture.
1947: A number of thunderstorms hit the mountains and deserts of Southern California giving daily record rainfall to many places.
1906: A tsunami developed in San Diego from a local sea quake.
1905: Bakersfield reached 110° F for a high temperature.
This feat would be accomplished on three other days this month, establishing a record for the most 110° F or better high temperatures in the month of August.
Only two other Augusts – 1913 and 1933 - have seen the high temperature reach at least 110° F for a high a total of 4 times in Bakersfield.

1998: Damaging winds from a nearby thunderstorm overturned two small planes at the North Las Vegas airport and knocked down a few power poles at the intersection of Craig Road and Rancho Drive.

1997: A cluster of severe thunderstorms raked Lake Havasu City, AZ, between 5:50 and 6:25 PM MST.
Wind from the storms reportedly ripped trees out of the ground, downed power lines, and tore tiles from roofs.
The city was also pelted with heavy rain and 3/4 inch diameter hail on the south side of town and up to one inch diameter hail on the north side. Subsequent flash flooding of washes swept away several vehicles and required swift water rescues of the occupants.
No serious injuries were reported.
1994: Heavy rainfall in Victorville and the High Desert flooded highways and homes.
A flock of 20,000 chickens was swept away in Newberry Springs, and washouts on roads and highways stopped all traffic in some areas for days until crews could repair them.
One person was swept away by flood waters at Lenwood and carried 200 feet before he was rescued by clinging to a telephone pole.
1989: One of the most severe convective outbreaks of record in Southern California began on this day and continued until 8/11, when it climaxed.
Over 1" of rain hit Idyllwild on 8/9 and more than 0.50" fell on Palm Springs on 8/10.
