2014: An upper level low from the southwest tapped monsoonal moisture over northern Mexico, producing rain and thunderstorms from the coast to the deserts.
After persistent morning rains, skies cleared, allowing severe thunderstorms to develop over the mountains and deserts.
Flash flooding and debris flows were common, causing road closures and damage.
Major mud and debris flows hit Mt. Baldy, Forest Falls and Oak Glen, with numerous road closures in the area.
Mt. Baldy reported 4.4" of rain in less than two hours, with 4" in 60 minutes.
Parts of the Anza-Borrego Desert received more than 2.5" of rain.
Damages from flash flooding exceeded $11 million in San Bernardino County alone.

2000: Lightning started a wildfire in the Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge (inside Nevada near CA-NV border east of Death Valley) that burned an estimated 1,200 acres. 

1997: A major heat wave started on 8.2 and ended on 8.7.
Temperatures hit 121° F in Thermal, 118° F in Borrego Springs, 113° F in Brea, 110° F in Riverside and Ontario, and 101° F in Julian.
The low temperature was 93° F in Palm Springs on 8.5.
Five deaths were attributed to this heat wave.
Dime size hail was reported at Campo on this day.

1997: A southern California radio station reported that more than 20 homes were flooded in Twentynine Palms from heavy thunderstorm rains.
Also, the flooding closed Route 62 for about 10 hours due to mud and debris across the road. 

1973: A severe thunderstorm struck Desert Center with winds estimated at nearly 100 mph.
Forty-two mobile homes were destroyed, and numerous power lines were downed.
0.50"-diameter hail was also reported.

1969: Saint Helena had a high temperature of 108° F.

1929: A severe thunderstorm in Yuma, AZ, un-roofs more than 10 buildings and completely destroys 2 others.

1928: Since records for Bakersfield have been kept at Meadows Field, only three days in the month of August have never received any precipitation – August 3rd, August 20th and August 25th.
