1996 Highway 58 Fire Anniversary

When:
Thursday, 15 August 2019

Where:
La Panza Range - San Luis Obispo County

Description:
The Highway 58 Fire started on August 15, 1996, and charred 106,668 acres and destroyed 13 homes and numerous other structures and vehicles over the following week. It started in the Black Mountain RV Park on Blue Road when an abandoned vehicle parked in dry grass was started up in order to move it off the property. This happened near Highway 58 and O'Donovan Road, quickly spreading to the south and east into the Los Padres National Forest, entirely burning the Machesna Wilderness Area. A week later it petered out in lighter fuels east of Pozo, CA and west of the Carrizo Plain.
