A wildfire in Moraga near St. Mary's College prompted officials to order evacuations of area residents after the fire quickly grew to 15 acres.

Officials with Cal Fire's Santa Clara Unit reported the blaze shortly after 1 a.m. Thursday. Evacuations were in effect just after 2 a.m., according to Contra Costa County Sheriff's Community Warning System.

"Due to a fast moving fire, an immediate evacuation has been ordered for the Sanders Ranch neighborhood in Moraga," officials said in a statement.

Residents along Sanders Ranch Road, Merrill Drive and Harrington Road should evacuate as soon as possible. Officials advised resident to head to St. Monica's Church in Moraga located at 1001 Camino Pablo.

"Take only those essential items you have ready and can carry with you. Pets must be in a carrier or on a leash. Lock your windows and doors as you leave," officials said. "Stay off the phone unless you need to report a life-threatening emergency at your location."

Moraga is one of the cities widely affected by the power shut-offs imposed by Pacific Gas and Electric Co. in an effort to prevent wildfires from being sparked by downed or damaged electrical lines. The shut-offs were in effect due to high fire danger and high winds in the area.

Just after 2 a.m., Cal Fire said crews were requesting "night air reconnaissance" at the scene. A number of local agencies were responding to the scene, Cal Fire said.

The blaze was 0% contained shortly before 2:10 a.m. Thursday. The cause of the fire was unknown.
