[CaliforniaDisasters] On This Date in California Weather History (October 11)

2015: Unseasonable high pressure and warm ocean waters led to very warm October days
and the warmest October nights on record from this day through 10/15.
In San Diego, five out of the six highest October minimum temperatures on record occurred.
The highest minimum temperature in any October was 76° on this day and again on 10/13.
This is only two degrees off the highest minimum temperature for any time of year!
(Only seven nights in history recorded 77° or 78°, all of which occurred during September, meaning these October nights were warmer than any night in July or August in San Diego).
On this day the highest minimum temperature in October was also recorded in Chula Vista (73°, only three degrees off all-time highest), Oceanside Harbor (74°, only two degrees off all-time
highest), and El Cajon (tied 69°).
On 10/13 Santa Ana recorded 78°, the highest October minimum temperature on record.
The top six warmest October nights on the Chula Vista record occurred this month, and the top five in El Cajon occurred this month.

2012: A cold upper level low produced several rounds of showers and thunderstorms over the Las Vegas Valley from the early morning through the late evening hours.
Rainfall was heaviest on the west side and in North Las Vegas where a general 1"-2" of rain fell with many locations exceeding 2".
Many roads flooded with several inches of water in the Las Vegas Valley especially during the evening hours.
Hail up to 1" in diameter also fell during the evening.
In addition, flash flooding took place in the foothills of the Spring Mountains at Calico Basin, Red Rock Canyon and Spring Mountain Ranch State Park where mud and large rocks washed onto roads.
A funnel cloud was reported southwest of Pahrump near the Nevada-California border.
This storm also brought snow to the higher elevations with 6" recorded at Lake Sabrina, California and 4.8" at the Las Vegas Ski and Snowboard Resort on Mt. Charleston.

2012: A closed upper-level low pressure system moved southward along the coast of California on the 9th and 10th and then moved onshore over southern California by the 11th.
Due to this upper low, shower and thunderstorm activity developed during the afternoon and evening over parts of Kern and Kings Counties in the San Joaquin Valley, as well as parts of the southern Sierra Nevada and Kern County mountain and desert areas.
Locations in the San Joaquin Valley generally received a tenth of an inch or less of rainfall.
Highway 99 was flooded by heavy rain ponding closing the right lane.
Highway 33 was closed due to flooding between Lerdo Highway and Brown Material Road.

2012:
A waterspout was observed about 200 yards off the coast of Carlsbad.
Numerous pilot reports were received of waterspouts off the coast in the vicinity of North Island and Imperial Beach.
Other waterspouts were seen off the coast of Orange County.
No landfall or damage was reported.

2008: From the 9th until the 11th there were several weather stations in the mountain passes, canyons, and deserts of San Joaquin Valley and Southern Sierra Nevada Foothills that recorded gusty winds up to 55 mph due to the passage of the low pressure system.
These strong winds produced areas of blowing dust at times across much of the San Joaquin valley.
This condition prompted local environmental health experts to issue warnings of the effects of blowing dust and reduced air quality. Strong winds caused minor property damage in Hanford, where a tree branch was blown down and blocked a roadway intersection.
Winds in the San Joaquin Valley gusted to 40-45 mph at times.

2008: Snow flurries fell in Summerlin, NV (suburb of Las Vegas).
This is the earliest known occurrence of snow
flurries in the Las Vegas Valley.

1991: Probable downburst winds in Kings County between Hanford and Corcoran, spawning an F0 tornado.

1973: The morning low temperature at Reno, NV was 21° F.

1969: Strong jetstream winds mixed down to the surface as powerful Mono Winds at night blowing off shutters on the Goat Mountain lookout.

1963: Los Gatos received 1.49" of rain.

1957: Heavy rain hit San Bernardino.
Rainfall of 0.5" occurred during 10 minutes at Del Rosa Ranger Station (a 40 year occurrence).
Total was 1.37" at the site from 10.11 to 10.14.
The rains eased the fire threat, but burn areas from fires the previous August led to debris flows into the northern San Bernardino area.
Tons of mud and debris were deposited in dozens of homes and yards from Little Mountain to Del Rosa.

1944: The trace of rain recorded on this date ended a streak of 101 consecutive dry days in Las Vegas, NV.

1924: An early season cold snap gripped Southern California from this day to 10.13, setting numerous daily minimum temperature records.

1899: Record low maximum temperature for the month of October, 53° F, in Fresno is recorded.
