[CaliforniaDisasters] On This Date In California Weather History (October 14)

2018: A low pressure system moved into southern California on October 13 and moved slowly inland on October 14.
While the precipitation with this system mainly stayed to the south of our area, it interacted with an upper ridge that was building into the Pacific Northwest  to produce a strong offshore gradient over central California which resulted in a brief period of strong mono-type northeast winds over the Southern Sierra Nevada during the late evening of October 14 and the early morning of October 15.
Several dead trees were blown down near North Fork and Bass Lake in Madera County resulting in some brief road closures and some damage to a few structures.

2015: Unseasonable high pressure and warm ocean waters led to very warm October days
and the warmest October nights on record from this day through 10/15.
In San Diego, five out of the six highest October minimum temperatures on record occurred.
The highest minimum temperature in any October was 76° on this day and again on 10/13.
This is only two degrees off the highest minimum temperature for any time of year!
(Only seven nights in history recorded 77° or 78°, all of which occurred during September, meaning these October nights were warmer than any night in July or August in San Diego).
On this day the highest minimum temperature in October was also recorded in Chula Vista (73°, only three degrees off all-time highest), Oceanside Harbor (74°, only two degrees off all-time
highest), and El Cajon (tied 69°).
On 10/13 Santa Ana recorded 78°, the highest October minimum temperature on record.
The top six warmest October nights on the Chula Vista record occurred this month, and the top five in El Cajon occurred this month.

2014: A trough of low pressure moving into northern California brought no rain to central California, but did increase the westerly winds across the coastal mountains and into the west side of the San Joaquin Valley.
These winds increased in the late afternoon and continued through the evening with gusts to 40 to 60 mph common through and below the passes and gaps in the coastal mountains, especially through and below Cottonwood Pass along Highway 41.
Sunflower Valley APRS reported a peak wind gust of 59 mph at 1906 PST. Panoche Road RAWS reported a peak wind gust of 62 mph at 1907 PST. These strong winds were blowing across Interstate 5 and highway 41.
Due to the extended period of drought across the San Joaquin Valley, the winds caused blowing dust across most of the west side of the valley. Visibility was reduced to near zero in blowing dust, resulting in stopped traffic along Interstate 5 and highway 41 and other county roads between Avenal and Lost Hills.
There were at least 7 accidents reported and highway 41 was closed from near Avenal to where it intersects highway 46 in San Luis Obispo county for at least 3 hours.

2009: A deep low pressure trough tapped into quite a bit of moisture from the remnants of Super-Typhoon Melor, bringing as much as around 2" of rain to the central and southern San Joaquin Valley on the 13th-14th.
Much higher amounts fell in the Southern Sierra Nevada.
Dinkey Creek received the most precipitation from this storm, with a storm total was just over 13" (about 9" of this fell in 12 hours on the 13th).
Wishon Dam recorded a storm total of around 10" by the 14th.
At the onset of this storm during the morning of Oct 13th, quite a bit of snow fell over the crest of the Sierra Nevada.
Once the precipitation began in earnest by the afternoon of the 13th, snow levels actually rose to over 10,000 feet, so most precipitation was falling as rain by the end of the event on the 14th.
Rock and mud slides were reported on Highway 198 in Sequoia National Park.
A Flash Flood Warning was issued for the Dinkey Creek area due to the very heavy rain.
A hydrograph showed a sharp rise in the stream flow due to rainwater runoff, indicative of a flash flood event in the creek which normally does not reach such high levels.
In addition to the near-record (and in a few locations, record) rainfall, the storm brought high wind gusts that toppled trees, downed utility lines, and created areas of blowing dust with near-zero visibility.
Wind gusts to 58 mph were recorded at both Castle Airport near Atwater (in Merced County) and Crane Flat in Yosemite National Park.
Gusts to 60 mph developed at the south end of the San Joaquin Valley near the base of the Grapevine, and 77-mph gusts occurred over the Temblors in western Kern County.
High winds in the Buttonwillow area caused a chain-reaction vehicle pileup on Interstate 5 around 515 pm on October 13th, where 3 people were killed in traffic collisions.
The California Highway Patrol reported several areas of wind damage to trees and powerlines in the Merced area on the 13th.

1997:
Santa Ana wind gusts measured 87 mph in central Orange County and contributed to a large fire.

1989: A F1 tornado tore the roof off a home and tossed around several cars in Henderson, NV.

1980: A funnel cloud was sighted 7 miles south of Lemoore Naval Air Station.

1978: It was 92° F in Palomar Mountain, the highest temperature on record for October.

1978: Fresno had its latest 100° F day on record.

1971: It was 97° F at Palomar Mountain, the highest temperature on record for October.

1962: Mount Diablo had received a record 10.01" of rain over the previous three days.

1962: Boca, CA (just east of Truckee), recorded 2.77" of precipitation.

1961: Hot Santa Ana winds drove the temperature to 110° F in Long Beach, the hottest in the nation, 107° F in San Diego (the highest on record for October), 105° F in LA, and over 100° F in many coastal and inland locations.
It was 88° F at San Nicolas Island.

1960: The morning low temperature at Reno, NV was 18° F.

1957: An early season storm brought daily record rainfall to Southern California.
Over 1" fell at many mountain locations and in parts of central San Diego County. La Mesa recorded 1.08".
